In early April, we headed out to an Unyoked tiny house for two nights.
The holiday rental platform has a number of tiny homes in locations across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Canberra and for convenience, we chose one that wasn’t too far out of Sydney.
The tiny house we stayed at, “Lila“, is in Pokolbin in the Hunter Valley. About a two-and-a-half hour drive from Sydney city, the home is located on a vineyard property, in a clearing within some bushland. While we had expected it to be a bit more secluded than this (eg: we didn’t think we’d be close to anything or have reception) the location of this specific tiny home, just minutes drive from the centre of the Hunter, was perfect for us. It meant that if we needed anything for our 8-month-old baby girl, we could quickly duck out and pick it up.
Lila
The house itself, set among the clearing, was picturesque on first arrival. Inside, timber walls and ceilings add to the reality of being surrounded by nature.
The queen sized bed is elevated off the floor and has space beneath it to store belongings. The kitchenette features your essential cutlery, plates, mugs (no wine glasses though!) and other necessities. There is a sink with hot and cold running water and a gas stove top with two burners.
The bathroom also has hot and cold running water too, with a shower screen, large vanity, storage space and a toilet. On first inspection, the toilet looks flushable, but we were surprised to find it is actually a drop toilet. However the way the drop toilet is designed assures there’s no nasty smells in the tiny home.
Outside, the property features a deck overlooking its surrounds. There’s a fire pit outside with the necessities to light and cook over a fire also stored in the house. A hammock tied between two trees offers another space in which to relax.
Tiny home with kids
In terms of travelling with a baby. The walk from the car to this tiny home was about 8 minutes, along a grassy, muddy path. We chose to ditch the pram and use a baby carrier instead. Wheel barrows are provided to transport your belongings.
We brought along a travel cot/portacot which fit perfectly next to the bed, with plenty of space for us to move around it. If you have a travel cot or you co-sleep, then there’s plenty of space for your little one. If your child is old enough to need its own bed, then this might not be the right sized accommodation for you.
A kettle and billycan is provided, which allowed us to sterilise bottles and teets. There’s no microwave though, so anything that needs heating up has to be done over the stove. We found this a relatively easy stay with out 8-month-old. If you’re wondering how luxurious it is, we’d say it was more like glamping than a hotel stay.
This specific tiny house has a neighbouring tiny home that you’re able to book at the same time, if you’re looking to go with friends.
We were given a gift voucher for Unyoked for one night by some colleagues. We chose to book a second night too. This getaway was not sponsored in any way.
